Due to the efforts of the Gender Equality and Family Committee, as well as women across Korea, the 'hoju' (head of family) system, one of the main features of patriarchal society, was abolished in March 2005. In 2005, in line with the reorganization and expansion of the Ministry of Gender Equality into the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Gender Equality and Family Committee was given greater responsibility for overseeing legislation and policies on family affairs and the protection of the rights of women. |
